PRE-SEASON REPORT | Reading 1 Charlton 1

Charlton’s fourth pre-season outing saw honours end even as the Addicks drew 1-1 with Reading in Berkshire.

Nigel Adkins returned to the dugout to face his former club following his period of self-isolation, with towering defender Ryan Inniss enjoying his first minutes of pre-season, while there was also an Addicks debut for new signing Sean Clare.

A quiet opening quarter at the newly-named Select Car Leasing Stadium saw chances at a premium for both sides, with Femi Azeez shooting tamely at Craig MacGillivray after the returning Inniss had nodded wide from a deep-hit Albie Morgan corner.

Diallang Jaiyesimi, starting on the right of the Addicks’ front three, burst into the Reading box shortly after the half-hour mark, but saw his goalbound effort blocked by John Swift.

MacGillivray did superbly to foil Ejaria’s header from close quarters on 38 minutes after Andy Yiadom had picked out the midfielder, though the Addicks stopper’s efforts proved to be in vain; Ejaria regathered possession to play a one-two with Swift, whose deft backheel allowed Ejaria to weave his way into space to smash past MacGillivray.

Adkins’ men started the second period sprightly, captain Conor Washington surging down the left flank to pick out Albie Morgan, whose first time effort flew over Rafael’s bar.

The Royals almost doubled their advantage just minutes later when Michael Morrison found Dejan Tetek in behind the Charlton defence with a hoisted ball forward, though the Serbian could only fire against MacGillivray’s left upright.

Swift soon gave the Addicks another warning, cutting in from the left onto his favoured right foot to fire narrowly wide from range.

A pair of Charlton substitutes contrived to level proceedings on 80 minutes, Lebanon youth international Ghandour stealing in to tap home Charles Clayden’s precise low drilled cross with what was the final piece of meaningful action of the afternoon.
