Bowyer on a tough loss at Peterborough United

Lee Bowyer bemoaned individual errors as the Addicks lost 2-1 at promotion rivals Peterborough United.

Charlton controlled the opening hour of the game and led 1-0 thanks to a 13th minute Conor Washington. A long kick forward in the 66th caused a miscommunication between Jason Pearce and Deji Oshilaja allowing Sammie Szmodics through on goal to level the scores and the attacking midfielder netted again 13 minutes later.

Speaking to Valley Pass Live after the game Bowyer said: “The first 40 wasn’t pretty, conditions were poor. It became a bit of a battle out there and I felt comfortable. If they did have any efforts at goal they were from distance. I thought our shaped worked well. We were in full control and then one long punt up the pitch again and two centre halves – no one takes control and the fella runs through and is one-on-one with the keeper. We’ve worked so hard at that, so it is disappointing. You just can’t give goals away like that. It is the same as Accrington, just one long punt through the middle of the pitch.

“Up until the goal, everytime the ball went up in the air, from back to front - which we limited them to, we stopped them playing out, we went up to the big fella everytime - we were on the front foot and competing and winning a lot of the balls. Then for whatever reason, that one over the top, both of them didn’t really want to take control and it cost us. It’s not good enough.

“It was two poor goals, we were in control of the game, they weren’t hurting us at all. Like as of late, we’ve given stupid goals away. I’ve said that to the players ‘we can’t keep giving stupid goals away’.”

Both sides had to deal with a poor pitch and Bowyer explained they adjusted their game plan which looked to be keeping the home side quiet.

He said: “In the middle of the park we tried to play but it was horrendous. It might have looked bad on the tele but if you look at the pitch it is not playable really.

“Were they miles better than us? I don’t think so and they are one of the teams that will be up there at the end of the season.

“They’ve given me everything, they have fought and they’ve competed to the best that they can, we have to keep working hard on the training pitch.”
