MATCH PREVIEW | Barnsley v Charlton

Take an in-depth look ahead to the Addicks' trip to South Yorkshire to face Barnsley on Saturday...

Charlton will look to continue their bright start to life back in the Championship when they travel to Oakwell to face Barnsley on Saturday (3pm). Bowyer will be hoping to make it three wins from three when they face the Tykes as they attempt to end their home record of 27 games unbeaten in the league.

Barnsley, who joined the Addicks in gaining promotion from League One in second place last season, will be hoping to return to winning ways having forged an impressive opening day win against Premier League-relegated-Fulham before slipping to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.

After resting a number of players during the Addicks' penalty defeat to Forest Green Rovers in the Carabao Cup, Bowyer will be hoping that his players are well rested and ready for the task ahead.

New signing Ehrun Oztumer won't feature this weekend with the game coming too soon to his move to SE7, while Lewis Page also continues to be sidelined. Beram Kayal will also have to wait for his Charlton debut as he continues to build his fitness. There are no other injury concerns for Bowyer.

Despite their 3-0 loss to League Two Carlisle in the Carabao Cup, Tykes Boss, Daniel Stendel, has been left with a goalkeeper quandary with Brad Collins impressing regardless of the scoreline.

The 22-year-old, who is on loan from Chelsea, made a number of fine saves and impressed the staff at Barnsley on his debut. He could prove worthy competition to Sahin-Radlinger who has taken the number one shirt at Oakwell following his arrival from Hannover 96 this summer.

Barnsley will still be without Midfielder Kenny Dougall as he recovers from a broken leg and Alex Mowatt is expected to be out of contention as he suffered a side strain during the defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Charlton boss, Lee Bowyer: "Its going to be tough, they got a good result at home in their first game against Fulham. I’ve watched them. They worked hard.

"They’re a physical side and they’ve got players that can hurt you. We have to respect them because they finished above us last year. We know they’re a good side and they’ve spent money in the summer so it’s going to be tough.

"I believe in the players I have, and they’ll give everything, and we’ll see what we come back with on Saturday."

Barnsley First-Team Coach, Dale Tonge: “We’re looking for a positive reaction this weekend; we expect a reaction and I think we’ll get it.

"We’re expecting a very, very confident team. If you look at the results, they’ve had two wins in two difficult games (Blackburn and Stoke) and, as you can see, they’re really adaptable; they’ve changed their shape numerous times within games.

"They’ve got good continuity within the team and it’ll be a really tough test.”

Saturday will see the 51st match between the two sides. Charlton have won 19 of their games against the Tykes, drawn 14 and lost 17 times.

last season saw the Addicks beat Barnsley 2-0 in an impressive home victory before losing 2-1 on the road, Brad Potts opened the scoring before Mamadou Thiam cracked in the hosts' second. Ben Reeves pulled one back for the Addicks but it was ultimately not enough and Charlton left Yorkshire empty handed.

Oakwell is the site of the Addicks' largest ever away victory in the League - a 6-0 drubbing of the Tykes in April 2013. Valley Pass subscribers can watch highlights from that match in the video below...

Matthew Donohue will oversee the proceedings on Saturday. Donohue has refereed three games this season but has managed to dish out a whopping 13 cards already, eight of those coming in the League Two clash between Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle.

Donohue last took charge of a Charlton game back in November 2018 during the Addicks' 3-1 home win against Bristol Rovers.

He will be joined by assistants Phillip Dermot and Nick Greenhalgh. David Webb will be the Fourth Official.

731 Addicks had purchased tickets before they went off sale on Thursday. Tickets will be available on the day, but with a £2 increase on the original price. Adult, senior and young adult tickets will be available for cash at the turnstiles, while juvenile tickets will have to be purchased from the home ticket office at the opposite end of the ground.
